Udokus Wins at Syracuse CSI-W 4*

Michael Whitaker marked his return to showjumping with a win in the CN Gambler's Choice top score with Simon Davies' promising eight-year old Udokus. "He jumped really well in all of the four classes he went in," said Michael, who was also placed in the first day's 1.45m table C class with the son of Murano. "He's a nice horse and he'll be coming with me to Toronto next."

The class required riders to be adorned in fancy dress, and Michael opted for a Sergeant Pepper costume. "It was the easiest outfit to go for", said Michael, who was also fifth in a 1.50m jump-off class with Wonami Van Den Aard. "The show supplied it."

Udokus, who beat American McLain Ward's Miss Liberty 7 to win the class by 10 points, was bought by Simon from the Netherlands as a five-year old and contested the seven-year-old classes at Lanaken last year with his owner.

"I didn't do a lot with him after that," said Simon, who rode Udokus while Michael was unable to compete. "Then he went to Michael, who took him to Global Champions Tour shows."

The gelding has been slowly produced and will now be campaigned more seriously.

"I never did any Foxhunter or newcomers second rounds, or anything like that with him," said Simon. "I could see he was going to be a grand prix horse one day so he's been brought on quietly."
